What Students Will Learn

Students will explore the principles of infrared communication, circuit design, and applied electronics by constructing and operating a fully functional desk lamp. This hands-on activity develops problem-solving skills, fine motor coordination, and an understanding of how remote control technology works in everyday devices. Key learning outcomes include: identifying infrared signals and their uses, understanding basic electronic components (resistors, LEDs, transistors), and applying the design thinking process to troubleshoot and refine a working prototype. The project also reinforces concepts of energy transfer, input-output systems, and user-centered design.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 to 9, this product aligns with Science, Digital Technologies, and Design and Technologies learning areas. It is particularly suitable for STEM elective classes, after-school coding clubs, and integrated project-based learning units. Teachers can adapt the complexity of the task for differentiated instruction, from basic assembly to advanced circuit modifications.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product directly addresses content descriptions from the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (ACTDIK007 – data representation and transmission, ACTDIP017 – designing algorithms for control systems), Science (ACSSU097 – electrical circuits and energy transfer, ACSIS103 – using scientific inquiry to solve problems), and Design and Technologies (ACTDEK019 – investigating technologies in products). It also supports the STEM F-10 integrated approach by combining electronics, programming, and design thinking.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This product uses pre-programmed microcontrollers and infrared modules, allowing students to focus on circuit assembly and system testing without the need for software coding. For advanced extensions, teachers can integrate Arduino or micro:bit coding (sold separately) to customise remote control functions.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: one pre-soldered infrared receiver module, one infrared remote control (battery included), LED lamp head with adjustable arm, base with circuit board and battery holder, connecting wires and resistors, screwdriver and assembly hardware, step-by-step illustrated instruction booklet, and a troubleshooting guide for common circuit issues. All components are classroom-safe and RoHS compliant.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each student or pair requires one kit and a flat workspace. No soldering or power tools are needed – assembly uses screw terminals and push-fit connections. Recommended classroom time: 2–3 sessions of 45–60 minutes. Teachers should have basic multimeters (optional) and AA batteries (4 per kit, not included). The activity works well with groups of 2–3 students to encourage collaboration. Storage in individual resealable bags is advised for component organisation.
