What Students Will Learn

This Infrared Smart Trash Can STEM Kit introduces students to the principles of automation, sensor technology, and engineering design. Learners will explore how infrared sensors detect motion to trigger mechanical responses, building a practical understanding of input-process-output systems. Through hands-on assembly and testing, students develop problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and an appreciation for real-world applications of STEM in waste management and smart home technology.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5 to 9, this kit is ideal for STEM electives, Digital Technologies classes, and Science units focusing on physical sciences and design thinking. It suits both introductory and intermediate levels, providing a scaffolded challenge that can be adapted for differentiated learning.

Australian Curriculum Links

This kit directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (Years 5–8) by enabling students to design, modify, and follow algorithms involving sequences and decision-making. In Science (Years 5–8), it aligns with Physical Sciences content on forces, motion, and energy transfer. For STEM F–10, it addresses Design and Technologies processes and production skills, including evaluating and refining design ideas. Teachers can easily map activities to curriculum outcomes for assessment and reporting.

Coding Platform

No coding required. The Infrared Smart Trash Can kit operates through a pre-configured infrared sensor module and mechanical linkage, allowing students to focus on engineering principles without the need for programming. This makes it an excellent entry-level project for building confidence in STEM.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: pre-cut wooden components for the trash can body and lid, infrared sensor module, servo motor, battery holder with leads, screws and mounting hardware, step-by-step assembly guide, and a quick-start troubleshooting card. All materials are durable and classroom-safe.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Students require a small workspace with access to a Phillips-head screwdriver (not included). The kit runs on 2 x AA batteries (not included). Assembly takes approximately 45–60 minutes, with additional time for testing and iteration. No soldering or specialist tools are needed. The kit can be used individually or in pairs, and is suitable for a standard classroom or makerspace environment.
