Montessori Matching Memory Chess Board

Engage young learners with a hands-on, screen-free STEM activity that strengthens cognitive skills, memory, and fine motor coordination. This Montessori-inspired matching game is designed for early childhood and primary classrooms, offering a tactile approach to problem-solving and pattern recognition.

What Students Will Learn

Students develop working memory, concentration, and visual discrimination through the classic memory matching format. The activity promotes logical thinking, turn-taking, and social skills as children play in pairs or small groups. Fine motor control is enhanced through the manipulation of chess-style pieces. Educators can integrate counting, colour recognition, and simple strategy discussions to extend learning across multiple domains.

Who It's For

Ideal for Foundation to Year 2 classrooms, this resource supports early years STEM, mathematics, and social-emotional learning. It is also suitable for special education settings and language development programs where visual memory and sequencing are key. Subject areas include Mathematics, Digital Technologies foundations, and general capabilities such as critical and creative thinking.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies (F-2) – recognising patterns and sorting objects; Science (F-2) – exploring cause and effect through observation; and STEM F-10 – developing problem-solving and collaboration skills. Specifically, it supports AC9MFSP01 (sort and classify objects), AC9M2M01 (recognise and describe patterns), and AC9TDIFK01 (explore and identify patterns in data).

No coding required. This is an unplugged, screen-free resource that builds foundational computational thinking skills through pattern recognition and sequencing without the need for digital devices or software.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: 1 wooden chess board base with 16 recessed slots, 16 coloured wooden chess pieces (8 pairs of matching colours/patterns), 2 wooden dice (one colour, one pattern), and a cotton storage bag. All components are made from sustainably sourced timber and finished with child-safe, non-toxic paint. The board measures 25 cm x 25 cm, ideal for small hands.
