Solar Energy Conversion Model Toy

What Students Will Learn

Students explore the principles of renewable energy by building and testing a working solar-powered model. They investigate how photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electrical energy to drive a motor. Through hands-on experimentation, learners develop understanding of energy transfer, efficiency, and the practical application of solar technology. The kit encourages inquiry-based learning as students modify variables such as light intensity, angle, and shading to observe effects on output.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 3–8, this product is suitable for primary and lower secondary classrooms. It aligns with Science and Design & Technologies learning areas, and can be integrated into cross-curricular STEM units. No prior knowledge of electronics is required, making it accessible for introductory lessons on energy and sustainability.

Australian Curriculum Links

Science: ACSSU097 (electrical energy can be transferred and transformed), ACSHE100 (science influences development of technologies).
Design & Technologies: ACTDEK019 (energy systems and their sustainability), ACTDEP025 (design and produce solutions).
STEM F-10: Supports outcomes in Energy Systems and Sustainability contexts, encouraging students to apply scientific understanding to technological design.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This product is a purely physical model that focuses on energy conversion and experimentation without digital programming components.

What's in the Box

  • Solar panel module (0.5W, 5V)
  • Small DC motor with fan attachment
  • Base platform and mounting brackets
  • Connection wires with alligator clips
  • Instruction booklet with guided activities
  • Protractor for angle measurement
  • Storage box

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Each kit requires a sunny windowsill or a bright desk lamp (60W equivalent or higher) for indoor use. No batteries or additional power sources are needed. Allow approximately 20 minutes for initial assembly. Students can work individually or in pairs. The model is robust enough for repeated use across multiple class periods. For best results, position the solar panel at a 45-degree angle to the light source.
