What Students Will Learn

Students will explore the principles of renewable energy and engineering by constructing a functional solar-powered water pump. This hands-on activity teaches key concepts in physics, including solar energy conversion, electrical circuits, and fluid dynamics. Learners will understand how photovoltaic cells generate electricity to power a motor, enabling water circulation. The project encourages problem-solving, critical thinking, and iterative design as students test and refine their pump's efficiency under different light conditions.

Who It's For

This product is designed for students in Years 4 to 8, with strong applicability across Science, Design and Technologies, and STEM F-10 curriculum areas. It is ideal for classroom investigations into energy sources, sustainability, and simple machines, and can be integrated into cross-curricular projects linking environmental science with engineering design.

Australian Curriculum Links

This resource directly supports the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU097 – energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity; ACSSU155 – electrical circuits provide a means of transferring electricity). It also aligns with Digital Technologies (ACTDIK020 – data representation and systems) and the STEM F-10 learning continuum, particularly in applying scientific understanding to design solutions for real-world problems such as water management in remote areas.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This product focuses on hands-on construction and experimentation with solar energy, making it accessible for students without prior programming experience. Teachers can optionally extend the activity by integrating simple data logging or sensor-based monitoring if desired.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: one solar panel (6V, 1W), one DC water pump motor, clear tubing (1 metre), a water basin, connector wires with alligator clips, mounting brackets, screws, and a detailed instruction booklet with classroom activity guides. All components are pre-tested and designed for easy assembly. No additional tools are required.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

To operate the pump, a sunny window or direct sunlight is needed; a desk lamp with a bright bulb can serve as an alternative light source. Each kit requires a small container of water (e.g., a plastic basin or beaker) and a flat work surface. Recommended for groups of 2-3 students to encourage collaboration. Teachers should allow 45-60 minutes for initial assembly and testing, with additional time for extended investigations.
