What Students Will Learn
This Wooden Elevator Model Science Kit provides a practical, hands-on introduction to fundamental STEM concepts. Students will explore the principles of mechanics, including pulley systems, counterweights, and simple machines, while developing a functional model of a real-world elevator. The kit encourages problem-solving, critical thinking, and fine motor skills as learners assemble the structure and test its operation. Through this process, students gain a deeper understanding of how forces, motion, and engineering design principles work together in everyday technology.
Who It's For
This kit is ideal for students in Years 5 through 8, supporting learning in Science, Design and Technologies, and Mathematics. It is particularly well-suited for classroom activities exploring physical sciences, engineering design processes, and systems thinking. The kit can be used in dedicated STEM lessons, as part of a broader unit on structures and mechanisms, or as an engaging extension task for curious learners.
Australian Curriculum Links
This product aligns with the Australian Curriculum for Science (F-10), including the Physical Sciences strand where students investigate forces and the behaviour of objects. It also supports the Design and Technologies curriculum by engaging students in designing, producing, and evaluating a simple mechanical system. For Digital Technologies, the kit can be integrated with coding activities (see Coding Platform section) to automate the elevator, linking to content descriptions about digital systems and algorithms. The hands-on nature of the kit addresses key STEM capabilities and fosters an inquiry-based learning environment.
Coding Platform
No coding required for basic operation. The mechanical elevator model functions manually, allowing students to focus on physics and engineering principles. For an extension activity, the kit can be adapted to work with a microcontroller platform (such as Arduino or micro:bit) to introduce basic programming and automation, though this requires additional components not included in the box.
What's in the Box
Each Wooden Elevator Model Science Kit contains pre-cut wooden parts for the elevator structure, pulleys, ropes, a counterweight, assembly instructions, and all necessary hardware (including screws, axles, and connectors). The kit is designed for easy classroom use, with all components clearly labelled and ready for assembly. No additional tools are required, though a screwdriver may be helpful for tightening connections. The kit is supplied in a durable box suitable for storage between lessons.
Classroom Setup & Requirements
Assembly time is approximately 45 to 60 minutes for a pair of students working together. The kit requires a flat work surface and adequate space for building. No specialised equipment is needed, though adult supervision is recommended for younger students during assembly. The finished model stands approximately 30 cm tall and can be operated manually by turning a crank. For group activities, we recommend one kit per two students to encourage collaboration. The kit is designed for single use but can be disassembled and reused if handled with care.
