This hands-on wooden elevator model introduces students to fundamental STEM concepts including mechanical advantage, pulley systems, and simple machines. By constructing and testing a working elevator, students develop problem-solving skills, spatial reasoning, and an understanding of force, load, and motion. The activity also encourages iterative design thinking as students refine their model for optimal performance.
Suitable for students in Years 3–8, this product supports learning in Science, Design and Technologies, and Mathematics. It is ideal for classroom STEM activities, maker spaces, and extension projects.
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU076 – forces and motion; ACSSU117 – energy and simple machines), Design and Technologies (ACTDEK010 – designing and producing solutions; ACTDEK019 – evaluating and improving designs), and STEM F-10 integrated learning outcomes. The model provides a tangible context for exploring how mechanical systems transfer energy and perform work.
No coding required. This is a purely mechanical model that focuses on hands-on construction and physical principles.
Each kit includes pre-cut wooden components, a pulley mechanism, string, axles, screws, and assembly instructions. All parts are precision-cut for easy fitting. No additional tools or materials are needed for assembly.
Students require a flat work surface and approximately 45–60 minutes for initial assembly. The model can be used individually or in pairs. No specialist equipment is needed. Teachers should ensure students follow safety guidelines when handling small parts and tools. The finished model is approximately 20 cm tall and can be used for demonstration or group activities.
