What Students Will Learn

This kit provides a hands-on, inquiry-based learning experience where students explore the principles of structural engineering and physics. Through constructing a working suspension bridge model, students will investigate tension, compression, load distribution, and the role of cables and towers. The activity encourages problem-solving, teamwork, and data collection as students test their bridge's strength and stability. Key concepts include force diagrams, equilibrium, and real-world engineering design challenges.

Who It's For

Designed for students in Years 5–10. Suitable for subject areas including Science (Physics), Design and Technologies, and STEM-focused elective classes. The kit supports differentiated learning, with extension tasks for advanced students and guided worksheets for those needing additional support.

Australian Curriculum Links

This product aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Science (ACSSU117, ACSSU229) for forces and energy, and Design and Technologies (ACTDEK029, ACTDEP036) for engineering principles and systems. It also supports the STEM F-10 Integrated Curriculum, particularly in the areas of problem-solving, critical thinking, and applying scientific understanding to design solutions.

Coding Platform

No coding required. This kit focuses on physical construction and manual testing, making it accessible to all students regardless of prior coding experience. Teachers may optionally integrate data recording using spreadsheets for analysis.

What's in the Box

Each kit includes: pre-cut wooden bridge components (towers, deck sections, crossbeams), nylon cord for suspension cables, metal connectors and hooks, a set of weights for load testing, a student instruction booklet with diagrams, and a teacher guide with curriculum mapping and extension activities. All materials are reusable for multiple classroom sessions.

Classroom Setup & Requirements

Requires a flat surface of at least 1.5 metres in length for bridge assembly and testing. Recommended for groups of 2–4 students. Basic tools needed: scissors (for cord trimming) and a ruler. No power tools or specialised equipment required. Each activity session takes approximately 60–90 minutes, including construction and testing phases. Suitable for standard classroom or laboratory environments.
